Your first visit to our office is an important one. It gives both
of us an opportunity to get to know each other. Establishing
a good relationship is vital to achieving our common goals of
improving and maintaining your dental health.

For some patients, the first visit is an emergency or a specific
urgent concern. If this is the case then of course we will attend
to the emergency situation first and make you comfortable.

If there is not an emergency concern, the first visit typically
involves taking any necessary x-rays, a comprehensive exam,
diagnosis, and treatment planning. This takes approximately
one hour. This time is necessary to accomplish several goals.
After taking the necessary x-rays, Dr. Schlesinger will sit down
with you to discuss your concerns and desires of improving your
dental health. He will review your x-rays along with your medical
and dental histories. Next we may take a tour of your mouth
using an intra-oral video camera. You will be able to see your
teeth from a whole new perspective on a television monitor.
Dr. Schlesinger will then do a thorough evaluation of your oral
health. This will consist of an examination of all of the
"soft tissues" including an oral cancer screening. In addition
an evaluation of the way you bite and your TMJ (jaw joint) will be
done. The bone and gums that support your teeth will also be evaluated.
Each tooth will be examined for decay or defective restorations. Dr. Schlesinger will then discuss and outline a plan for any recommended treatment. Alternative treatment plans can be discussed depending on your particular wants and needs. If your condition requires more complex planning, a separate consultation, or "review of findings," may be needed. There is no additional charge for this visit.

Please note that a "cleaning" will not always be done during the first visit. We will make every attempt to do so but for some patients the time necessary will far exceed what is usually allotted. Experience has shown us that every patient's needs are different. We cannot anticipate what kind of “cleaning” a patient needs or how much time is required without an examination. In order to provide the best treatment possible, the appropriate amount of time should be reserved for preventive care. After the first visit, cleaning and checkups will always be done at the same time.
